We are pleased to invite you to participate in the next International Road Safety GAMBIT 2012, which will take place at the Gdańsk University of Technology on 26-27 April, 2012. The series of meetings devoted to the theory and practice of prevention in road safety enhancement was started back in 1996, when we held a seminar on "An Integrated Road Safety Programme GAMBIT'96, funded by the State Committee for Scientific Research and ordered by the then Ministry of Transport and Maritime Economy. We have had biennial meetings at our University ever since, and at the end of our seminar next year we will discuss the programme of the special 10th GAMBIT Seminar planned for April 2014.

The keynote of GAMBIT 2012 next year will be "The Role of Poland in Implementing the UN Programme for the Decade of 2011-2020." It was last year that the UN General Assembly initiated the Decade of Action for Road Safety, calling on member countries to intensify preventive efforts. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appealed to the leaders of states, international organisations and associations, the academia and business to join the initiative and made it clear that joint efforts could translate into millions of lives saved. He also encouraged national governments to create their agendas for the Decade.

In Poland, the implementation of the programme began on 11 May 2011, when the Parliamentary Road Safety Group solemnly declared to support the UNO idea with the most important preventive activities planned for the next few years to come. GAMBIT 2012 Seminar will therefore be an opportunity to present the initiatives planned or actually implemented in our country. We are pleased to inform you that Ms Beata Bublewicz – Member of Parliament, the coordinator of the UN Decade activities in Poland, and the head of  Parliamentary Road Safety Group will join in the preparation of the content of the Plenary Session on the UN programme.

Apart from the keynote session on the Decade of Action, there will be other thematic blocs on GAMBIT 2012 agenda, concerning most vital problems of road safety. Our main focus will be on EU transport policy guidelines and the Commission requirements contained in EU Directives. There will also be time to discuss speed enforcement automation or drink and drug checks of road users. Recent experiences from infrastructural projects and problems of road safety education will also be presented.

As usual, we hope for the involvement of our guests – experts in many areas, engaged in seeking solutions to road safety problems. They, we hope, will be kind enough to share their experiences with us. Among them will be representatives of the scientific community, local and national government administration, NGOs and the industry – experts from Poland and from abroad.  We invite you to come to Gdańsk.
